Afro Surrealism R Redscarepod In the late 19th century many freed slaves from brazil (especially bahia) returned to west africa. many brought with them skills which were useful on their return. many were trained in carpentry and other skilled trades and built many brazilian style baroque buildings in the area. many of their descendants became a part of the burgeoning west. Afro surrealism sees that all “others” who create from their actual, lived experience are surrealist, per frida kahlo. the root for “afro ” can be found in “afro asiatic”, meaning a shared language between black, brown, and asian peoples of the world. what was once called the “third world,” until the other two collapsed. Afro surrealism is a literary and cultural aesthetic that responds to mainstream surrealism in order to reflect the experience of blackness. washu graduate students lacy murphy (art history & archaeology) and kevin mccoy (sam fox school of design & visual arts) write about the movement and two of its leading practitioners, who will take part in an on campus conversation,. The manifesto delineates afro surrealism from surrealism and afro futurism. the manifesto lists ten tenets that afro surrealism follows including how "afro surrealists restore the cult of the past", and how "afro surreal presupposes that beyond this visible world, there is an invisible world striving to manifest, and it is our job to uncover it".
