2004 Vw Passat 1 8t Cooling System Diagram Here is a diagram for the 1.8t (aeb, atw, but others are similar). i put a red circle where the thermostat is. 13 is commonly referred to as the coolant flange, where the coolant temp sensor sits as well. coolant flows through the heater core all the time, regardless of tstat position, or heater controls. The spurting into the reservoir indicates exhaust gasses entering the cooling system. i suspect you have a cracked head or leaking head gasket. bleeding the cooling system 2.8 and 1.8. 2.8 & 1.8 the cooling system should be bled any time the water in the reservoir has been very low or the system has been opened (other than the filler cap).
